The Amalgamation

Camberwell Campus from the air.In 1993, 30 years after the senior school moved from Canterbury Road, Camberwell to Bulleen, a new phase in the history of Marcellin began with the closing of the Camberwell campus and the amalgamation of the senior and junior schools on one campus at Bulleen. The primary section had been closed in 1981.

Many years of planning preceded this move. Architectural firm Graeme Law and Associates drew up a master plan to accommodate the influx of junior students. The first stage included a new science building (now Montagne), ground floor science additions to the main building (now part of Hermitage) and refurbishment to other buildings.

At first incoming Year 7’s were housed in portable classrooms, named Ardmara in memory of the stately home which was the centre of the old campus in Camberwell. Many older members of the Marcellin community experienced a great sense of sadness and loss at the decision to close the old school, but falling numbers and economic factors made the move necessary.

At the end of 1993 the principal, Mr Paul Herrick, reported that the amalgamation had been a resounding success. Staff and students responded with a positive attitude to the demands and practices of a new institution.

Marcellin Archives is lacking in photos and memorabilia from the 60s and 70s, particularly from the senior school. If that was your era or that of your family, we would be grateful for any items which document this important period of Marcellin’s history.
