2013 Rugby Presentation NightOn the last night of Term 3 over 200 people attended the finale to the 2013 Rugby season.  Just like most other Rugby events the attendance seems to get bigger each year. The evening kicked off with a great sit down dinner courtesy of the Rugby Parents Support Group. Jake Williams, in his last official role as 2013 Captain of Rugby opened the evening with the official welcome.  Principal, Mr Mark Murphy continued the welcome and was presented with a framed jersey, by First XV Captain James Dell, to commemorate the First XV’s winning AAMI Park curtain raiser game. The framed jersey was kindly donated by the Kiley family who have been tremendous supporters of Rugby at Marcellin. John Cullen, President of the Parents Support Group gave an overview of the season from the perspective of the PSG. He highlighted how the PSG contribute to Rugby at Marcellin through the many and varied activities they orgainse and participate in. Mr Simon Strachan, in his last official function as Teacher in Charge of Rugby, gave an overview of the year. In summary it was an outstanding season with many highlights across all the age groups including the amazing statistic of over 720 egg and bacon rolls sold by the kiosk during the season! The guest of honour, Mr Simon Quintner, the first ever Captain of Rugby from 1996 gave an enlightening talk on Rugby at Marcellin back when it was just starting out. We all owe a tremendous amount to those boys who chose to go against the grain and play Rugby and for Simon who championed it. I am sure they would all be very pleased to see how their legacy has been built upon by all the Marcellin boys and supporters over the years.

Each of the year groups were given an opportunity to present their season and to thank their respective coaches and managers. There were many stories of team and individual achievement culminating with the various trophies to the standout members of each team. This year saw the introduction of a special First XV award. Donated by Simon Quintner and family it is awarded to a First XV player who has shown dedication, courage, determination and embodied the Spirit of Rugby at Marcellin. The inaugural winner of the “Quintner” was the very popular choice of Paul Sporton. In celebration of the outstanding season of the First XV the entire squad was presented with a special edition “Harv” poster highlighting the season’s achievements courtesy of the PSG. The evening finished off with the traditional roasting of the leaving Year 12’s after they accepted a newly minted Marcellin Rugby tie. Finally, and a highlight for some, desert was served!

Another great season for Marcellin Rugby which will just keep getting better and better.
